The first round is increasingly not a person. Some employers send a one-way video interview, where you record answers to preset questions on your own time. Others use an AI voice interviewer that asks questions, listens and asks follow-ups. Both are common for high-volume hiring such as campus drives, graduate programmes and customer-facing roles.
These formats reward different habits from a live conversation. There is no interviewer's face to read, no chance to ask "did that answer your question?", and a strict timer. This guide explains how the formats work, what they tend to evaluate, and a short practice plan.
The two formats you will meet
One-way video (for example HireVue): you see a question as text or a short video, get preparation time, then record your answer within a time limit. Employers configure the details, but commonly there are several questions, roughly 30 seconds to think and one to three minutes to answer, with a limited number of retakes or none. Always read the instructions on the start screen, because they are set per employer.
AI voice or video interviewer: an AI agent runs a conversation, asks follow-ups based on your answers and produces a transcript or summary for the recruiter. It feels closer to a phone screen, but the follow-ups are consistent for every candidate, and your answers are usually reviewed later by a person.
What these systems evaluate
Treat the transcript as the product. Recruiters and scoring models focus mainly on what you say: whether you answered the question asked, the structure of the answer, concrete evidence such as numbers, tools and outcomes, and whether it matches the job's requirements. HireVue, one of the largest platforms, announced in January 2021 that it had stopped using facial analysis in its assessments.
That does not make delivery irrelevant. Humans still watch recordings. Clear audio, steady pacing and looking at the camera make you easier to evaluate. Filler-heavy answers produce messy transcripts that are harder to score well.
Structure every answer for a timer
Use a fixed shape so the clock never surprises you. For behavioural questions use STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result), with most of the time spent on Action and Result. For motivation questions use point, reason, example, link to the role. Aim to finish in about 90 seconds even when three minutes are allowed. Complete, focused answers beat long ones that get cut off.
Use the preparation seconds to write three words: the example you will use, the key action, and the result. Do not start recording the moment you feel ready if thinking time remains. A structured 80-second answer beats a rambling 180-second one.
A 3-day practice plan
Day 1: list the job description's must-have skills and map one real story to each. Write the result of each story as a number or a clear outcome. Record yourself answering "tell me about yourself" and "why this role?" once each, and watch both recordings back.

Setup mistakes that fail good candidates
Technical problems are the most preventable failure. Test the platform's camera and microphone check early, use a supported browser, close apps that grab the camera, charge the laptop and use a stable connection. Sit facing a window or lamp rather than with your back to it. Use a wired headset if the room echoes.
Read the rules on the start screen. Many one-way and AI-led assessments prohibit notes, other people and live assistance, and some monitor browser focus. If assistance is not allowed, do not use it. The best preparation happens before you press start.
Questions to expect
Most one-way rounds mix motivation and behaviour: tell me about yourself, why this company, a time you handled a conflict, a time you failed, a time you learned something quickly, and how you prioritise competing deadlines.
